The Summer of Dreams

It felt like it would never arrive.

I’d been counting down the days for school to come to an end and finally allow me the time to chase my dream.  Now, school’s out and today is officially the kickoff to the Summer of Dreams!  What is the Summer of Dreams?  Read on…

In this post, I am inviting you to come along for a journey.  The beauty of it is that it’s not just my journey, but yours too.  We might not share the details, but substitute my dreams and goals for your own and see if my journey encourages you to adapt it for yourself.  I want to briefly share:

  • Where I’ve been
  • Where I’m at now
  • Where I’m headed

Where I’ve Been

Step 1

In the last 6 weeks or so, I accomplished a lot.

First, I did a serious self-assessment.  What are my gifts?  What do I enjoy doing?  Why am I here?  I know… that one’s pretty deep, but important!  What did I learn?  I communicate well.  Whether it be teaching or writing, I have a way of getting a message across in an interesting and understandable way.  More than that, it’s also what I enjoy doing.  Nothing makes me feel so alive as when I’m able to stir people’s hearts.  Realizing my gifts and what I enjoy doing led quite naturally to understanding my purpose.  I’m a messenger.

Step 2

Second, I discerned what God calls me to share.  That took a bit less time to figure.  My background is in theology and I’m at my best when teaching and/or writing about faith.  Granted, that’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it needn’t be.  It’s mine.  (Maybe it’s yours too.  If so, that’s wonderful!  Every message needs a receiver.)  So my message is faith, with a focus on truth and love in particular.  Why truth and love?  It seems to me that these two are too often divorced from one another.  However, they lend themselves nicely to romantic fiction.  They also fit well within a non-fiction format.  Honestly, I want to do a lot with each genre.

Step 3

Third, I started writing.  I’m 10,000 words into my first novel.  The only way to do it is to do it.  If you have an inkling that there’s some work you’re called to do, then just get busy.  It feels really good when you get after it.

Step 4

Fourth, I realized that if I was going to write with the intent of getting a message out there, then I would need an audience.  Realizing one wouldn’t just form out of thin air, I designed this website, got active on Facebook and Twitter, and after just two weeks I have almost 50 Twitter followers.  Now, that’s not much, but when you consider I haven’t asked for a single follow from a friend, and all I’ve done is follow others (an enjoyable thing to do, by the way), then I think it’s a pretty good start, wouldn’t you say?  Who do I follow?  I don’t follow the traditional path of following my friends.  Instead, I’m following other writers and inspirational speakers/individuals.  Every time I check my timelines, I find inspiration.

I certainly feel like I’ve done more than that in the last 6 weeks, but no matter how simple that all seems, I assure you it took every ounce of free time I had.  I share that with you so you know that whatever God calls you to do, it involves work, but it’s a labor of love if it’s right for you.

Where I’m At Now

Today is the beginning of the Summer of Dreams.  As I write this, I stand on the precipice of a life-changing effort.  Writing this post, in fact, marks the beginning of this new season of my life.  Tomorrow, I’ll return to my book-writing, which was stalled while I set up my social platform.  That’s where I will be investing most of my time in the coming weeks.  At the same time, I won’t ignore learning about social media and how to grow a potential readership.  Even a great book will fail if there’s nobody to read it.

Where I’m Headed

Alongside my first novel, I’ll be working on some of my non-fiction content as well.  If you sign up for my newsletter, I’ll keep you updated on how each of those is going and I hope to have my first free gift to offer by July.

So that’s where I’ve been, where I am, and where I’m headed.  How about you?  I’d love to hear what your gifts are, what you enjoy, and why you think you’re here.  Let’s make this journey together!
